Application of Filter Press in Hydrocolloid Production

2025-03-27

For a long time, carrageenan and agar were constrained by their hydrophilic properties during the dewatering process, where producers would stack the colloids in woven bags and then compress them for extended periods using stones or hydraulic press. This primitive dewatering type is inefficient, requires a large amount of manual labor, has a poor production environment, and the product quality is also difficult to control. The first application of filter press to the Hydrocolloid industry was by Yabuta from Japan. They used a filter press commonly used for filtering Japanese sake to experimentally dehydrate carrageenan after condensation, achieving unexpected results. However, this filter press for sake was not perfect for hydrocolloid dewatering. so in 2011 XUDA Engineering designed a membrane filter press for the different colloidal properties of carrageenan and agar which achieved great success.

Over the past 10 years, we have continuously improved the detailing based on customer feedback. Nowadays, the carrageenan and agar dehydrating filter presses produced by XUDA Engineering have received unanimous praise from users for automation, productivity and reliability. The water content of dewatered film after dehydration can be reduced to 72%~75%, with uniform thickness for subsequent granulation and drying.

Moreover, XUDA Engineering has designed and produced a special filter press for hot gel filtration, which has improved and upgraded the filtration process, reduced the amount of filter aid used and improved the yield of the product with excellent performance. Learn more about the special filter press for hydrocolloid production, visit our web: www.xudaengineering.com
